This is one of my tattoos, first inked on me in 1994 and recoloured a couple of times since. It was inspired by the 1982 Doctor Who serial Kinda, in which characters had a snake symbol on their forearms, but modified to symbolise feminism (the woman symbol in the mouth), queer pride (rainbow colours) and the goddess Artemis, who the Spartan goddess Orthia was related to (the symbol on the snake’s head – an arrow through a crescent moon). The serpent is a spiritual symbol in many religions, a sexuality symbol, a symbol of creativity (hence its placement above my right hand), and my first name is listed in some name books as meaning ‘wise serpent’.
